What is hard water or limescale?

Hard water is water with high concentration levels of calcium and magnesium, when heated, revert back to rock. This can cause a hard crust to form on food service equipment such as ice machines, coffee brewers, espresso machines and steamers. Over time it can reduce the efficiency and damage the equipment. Also called “limescale”.

Hard water problems?

Hard water causes scale to build up in kettles, boiling water taps, steamers, coffee machines, pipes, washing machines and other hot water systems. You can also find deposits of scale on showerheads, baths, basins and taps.

Higher energy costs when limescale is present

Heating lime scale wastes energy and money along with an increased boiling time. When there is no lime scale present you can expect a domestic hot water cylinder to take 1.5 hours to heat up. If the same cyliinder has just 5mm of scale the boiler has to run for over 4 hours to heat up, thus wasting 2.5 hours of energy and cost.

Increased maintenance

In the UK lime scale ‘build-up’ damages our kitchen appliances resulting in higher maintenance costs and shorter appliance life.
